Easy-peasy cleaning pastes & solutions free of toxins, and inexpensive!

Baking soda

  • Spot-removal/Sink-cleaning paste: 3 tbsp baking soda & 1 tbsp water

This paste could also be used to clean inside your oven. Rinse off with a cloth soaked with vinegar-water (a 50-50 mix).

White Vinegar

  • Window&Mirror cleaning solution: 3 tbsp white vinegar & 2 cups hot water.

Glass shower doors can be cleaned with a cloth soaked in vinegar; soap and calcium stains will come right off. Mildew/mold can be eliminated by rubbing them with a sponge dipped in vinegar, and letting the surface air dry.

– There shouldn’t be a lingering smell of vinegar, but if you detect any off-putting odour, the next time you make your solutions, mix in some lavender essential oil (3-5 drops for every 2 cups should do it). –

Water

If your microwave has some crusted-up grime, heat a mug of water in it for two minutes. The steam will loosen the stains and you’ll be able to wipe them off with a cloth. Your microwave will smell squeaky-clean if you put a slice of lemon/orange in the mug of water before heating.

** This doesn’t cover all your house-cleaning needs, but it eliminates some of your commercial-cleaner needs. For other things, like floor cleaner, there are some good, locally-produced “green” cleaning products. They’re available at most grocery stores – just check the label to see if there’s at least a semi-convincing certification of eco-friendliness. I’ve found a couple that I like, I’ll post info at some point! **
